A legendary superhero becomes a massively popular meme and keeps his secret identity.
A story about how what happens to the stuff that you put online could be beyond your imagination.

You can find Fritsch's documentary, "The Story Of Techno Viking" here:

"I'm Doing Work"

We keep using that word, productivity. Maybe it doesn’t mean what we think it means.

The first episode of season one looks at how the productivity obsession took over and why it’s making people do bizarre and pointless things.

Notes For This Episode

Steven Poole  is the author of many books including Unspeak, Who Touched Base In My Thought Shower and You Aren’t What You Eat. His article Why the cult of hard work is counter-productive  has appeared on the New Statesmen.

This episode includes original music by Uri Mohilever.

The Art Of Not Working

PART TWO

The artist Ignacio Uriarte was stuck at a dead-end office job. Until one day he started to experiment with this concept—doing office work but without the actual work.

Episode two looks at art, office life and the freedom of zoning out.

Notes for this Episode

I first heard about Ignacio’s work on Benjamen Walker’s podcast Theory of Everything. You can see more of Ignacio’s art on his website.

To Dive Or Not To Dive

PART THREE

Doing nothing in a time of trouble can actually save the day.

In this episode we look at what football goalkeepers are doing wrong, decision making psychology and economics to explore the option most people don’t even consider–not doing anything.

Notes For This Episode

You can read more about Bar-Eli’s research here  and learn more about the biases of decision making according to Daniel Kahneman in his book Thinking, Fast and Slow.  Trading is Hazardous to your wealth can be found here.  There is an actual study proving that changing lanes does not make you go faster which can be found here  and an excellent article by Atul Gawande about the problem of too much medical care. The Sherlock Holmes story is called Silver Blaze.

This episode includes original music by Uri Mohilever.

Fighting Blue Sky Thinking

PART FOUR

Gavin Pretor-Pinney is a man on a mission. For the past ten years he has been trying to change the way people think about clouds.

The final episode of season one looks at a group of 40,000 people who are fighting the tyranny of so-called blue sky thinking.

Notes For This Episode

You can find out more about the Cloud Appreciation Society here  or watch Pretor-Pinney’s talk on TED  and on the Google Zeitgeist Mindsconference.

The original photo  of the Asperitas cloud was taken by photographer Jane Wiggins  and it has been included with her kind permission. Also included with permission are photos by Jason Tack Annegret Richter  and Roger Lewis.

And here  is an interesting interpretation of John Constable’s Cloud Studies.

This episode includes original music by Uri Mohilever.
